As the Senior Staff Engineer (Senior Architect)reporting to the Senior Director of Technology, Global eCommerce for Wal-Mart International, you’ll have the opportunity to help define the architecture and technology strategy for Wal-Mart’s eCommerce solution. This hands-on position will be responsible for architecting an eCommerce solution in a Java EE and Commercial and Open Source software package environment, working together with the engineering managers on this team. The chief architect will serve as the technical guide for the development teams working on this platform. A wide degree of creativity and efficiency is expected. The title will depend on the experience of the candidate and level of match with the job requirements.
Responsibilities:
• Serve as the architecture, design and interface decisions related to Wal-Mart’s eCommerce solution
• Own the architecture and technology stack for the eCommerce solution and guide our technology partners to build the right solution
• Work with key members of the management team to define and drive technical strategy and architectural direction for the eCommerce solution
• Assess, recommend, build and integrate with best-of-breed, off-the-shelf commercial and open-source software components
• Review and provide guidance to Wal-Mart’s eCommerce initiatives in various countries
• To meet business needs, review and recommend technologies from both global software providers, open source as well as in-country specialized products, for inclusion into the platform
• Accountability of the platform’s infrastructural components like Application Servers, Middleware, Database, Content Delivery Networks from a design and run perspective
• Drive the design methodology of the software development process and ensure adoption within Wal-Mart’s technology partners
• Assess feasibility and ramifications of new business requirements. Design appropriate solutions and recommend alternative approaches when necessary
• Stay abreast of advancements in eCommerce technologies in order to determine relevance and possible impact to existing system
• Recommend and drive adoption of engineering best practices, including use of design patterns, code reviews and automated unit testing
Qualifications:
• B.S. or M.S. in Computer Science or equivalent
• 12+ years in software engineering experience
• 8+ years programming and designing in Java and related Internet technologies
• Periodic travel (1-3 trips per quarter) to third-party partners, Wal-Mart locations worldwide, trade shows, new product rollouts, etc.
